Contrasting film slide and digital technology in order to research why film can’t be replaced by digital tech in contemporary art.

Abstract:

When photography was invented in 1839, film photo has had constant impact on contemporary art. Yet simply shoot photo by camera can not meet the requirement for artists. Photography has been developing to various forms nowadays, as the traditional techs fading away and digital photography continuously developing. However, more and more artists decided to disobey the trend and go back to find new possibilities in old fashioned film photography. Creative methods are created in which films are regard as more of a material to be involved into artists’ works. Some of the artists are nominated in this project, such as Sigmar Polke, Lucas Samaras, Marco Breuer. Their unique ways of using films and the works which applied those unique techniques are studied, in order to discover how film ,as a material, impacts on contemporary art. It is only in the field of art, that a outdated tech of film could be still popular among some artists and may never too old to be abandoned.

key words: film, film art, traditional technology, digital photography

Introduction:

In accord with abstract(300 words)
Summarizing various methods of film reproduction

Lucas Samaras

Method one, re-create on the surface of the film, such as burn it, scratch it, cut it, and grinding or polishing.(600 words)

Marco Breuer

Method two, apply chemical solutions to the film, transform the shape or characteristic of the film by chemical reaction. (600 words)

Sigmar Polke(600

Method three: deliberately mess up the procedures of developing films, in order to create difference in photos.

Each method will be introduced by an example artists, to analyze what possible results will be received, and why digital techs will not able to do that.

Digital techs, which emerged in 90s, have had massive impact on the conventional medias, it not only ruled out the analog techs, but also bring vast possibilities. However, weakness and drawbacks do exist.

Photoshoped after effects are not always that natural.

Digital after effects are normally based on one’s own opinions and visions, that’s where it could be limited.

The main reasons that artists still fancy this ruled out technology as a method of creating their own work are listed below.

Unexpected results often occur during the process of reproduction using films, the results can be random and fascinating.

Is capable of presenting a natural result (picture)via actual chemical and physical reactions.

Conclusion:Despite the fact that photographic film has been phased out of the public’s choices, it can still be in artists’ favour, as the unique charm and potential of itself can be applied in their art works. (350words)
